2008 Tom and Daddy Trip
Virginia Beach
Due to time constraints and scheduling issues, this year's Tom and Daddy trip was folded into a family vacation. We aren't
willing to give up the tradition of a yearly trip but at the same time, things have changed. This summer I taught a summer class
and Tom was working at Walmart. So we couldn't just run off for a week somewhere at random.
Julie, Tom, Kathy and I spent four days at the Ramada Hotel, 6th and Oceanfront, at Virgina Beach.
We had never been there before so it was a new and fun experience. We had adjoining connecting rooms on about the
12th floor, with balconies overlooking the boardwalk, beach and ocean. Do not have an
itinery to present but here are some random memories of our time there:
- We took two cars - just makes life easier while at the beach.
- Beach was very wide. Water was refreshing.
- Several live music places on the boardwalk.
- Coffee on the balcony of the hotel room.
- Tom and I visited an Irish bar one night for some live music. Place was almost empty and we ended up sitting and
talking with the singer, who was from Lancaster my home town, for about an hour.
- The food at the restaurant in our hotel, Mahi Mah's was fantastic. Great seafood. Nice lunch specials.
- About 120 volleyball nets arranged nearby on the beach - with lots of good volleyball taking place most of the time
- tournaments and pick-up.
- We drove into downtown Norfolk one day to visit the place where I co-chaired a conference in 2004. Visited the
war memorial, walked around, the conference venue, some stores, indoor mall for lunch.
- Biking on the boardwalk. Walks by the water.
