2005 Tom and Daddy Trip

The "Mid South"

Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Kentucky

Diary

I'm working on this in July 2007 and I really don't remember many details and I can't find any photos. Shoot. I did find our plans, but I know we deviated some .. using them and brainstorming with Tom, here is, briefly, what we did. I've added some images of the places we visited to spice things up.

We left home early on Friday, August 12 and drove to D.C. We stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Hill, right beside the U.S. Capitol. We stayed in this same hotel on our first trip, in 1994. On Friday we visited the Smithsonian.

Saturday we visited two friends (Alex and Joe ("Crash")) that Tom has made on-line. Computer geeks all, and proud of it. We drive to their house in the Virginia suburbs of Washington where the boys are setting up their afternoon web-radio talk show broadcast. Both boys are about Tom's age and very bright. We eventually all go out to lunch at a local Italian restaurant, the boys, a girl friend, Alex's mother, Tom and I. A very nice lunch and the kids talk computing throughout. Then we head towards West Virginia.

Sunday we arrive in Charlestown, WV. We arrive in plenty of time to check into our hotel and tour around the downtown area before attending Mountain Stage, where musicians come to play. We have long enjoyed Mountain Stage on public radio and it is great to be able to attend a performance. We see ...

The Greencards Tony Joe White Kasey Chambers

Monday we drive to Louisville and check into the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center for two nights. A pleasant late afternoon stroll around a "chic" area and a visit to a microbrewery for a late lunch is followed by a ballgame at Louisville Slugger Field between Louisville and Scranton. We leave in about the 6th inning, just ahead of the thunderstorm.

Tuesday up and out to Mammoth Cave National Park. The cave was mammoth.

Back to Louisville in time to see "Love, Janis" at the Actors Theater. The show based on the letters Janis Joplan wrote her mother was well done and very entertaining.

Wednesday we head home .. I have a feeling we did SOMETHING on the way home but I don't remember what!

Thursday - home.
