Part 1: July 31 to Aug 2 - Downingtown to Chicago (730 miles)

 

  • Perhaps visit the Thomas Edison birthplace in Milan, Ohio.
  • Notre Dame (and maybe play the Warren golf course).
  • The Adler Planetarium in Chicago.
  • Business meeting at ISC.

  • Pack.
  • If we are ready and we feel like it, go ahead and leave some time today.
  • Pa Turnpike to Ohio (Rt 76).

 

 

Thursday

Aug 1

 

 

  • Up early and leave.
  • Turnpike turns from Rt. 76 to Rt 80 near Youngstown, and picks up Rt. 90 outside of Cleveland.
  • Visit the Thomas Edison birthplace in Milan, Ohio; tours on the half hour, 10 – 5; exit 118 then south on Rt 250 for 2 miles. Allow 1 hour.
  • Stay at the Ramada Inn, exit 77, 1 mile north on US 933; (574-272-5220); $59.50; includes a hot breakfast; conf #P42370; see page 518.
  • Tour Notre Dame campus; play Warren?

 

 

Friday

Aug 2

 

  • Leave in the morning after the free breakfast. Dress decently?
  • Drive to Chicago; Indiana Turnpike (Rt. 80 and 90 that becomes just Rt. 90 near Gary).
  • Morning at the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum (see page 56), open at 9:30, 1300 South Lake Shore Drive; exit Rt 90 near 26th Street onto Stevenson Expressway heading East to Lake Shore Drive then North a little bit (?) or maybe exit 90 at Roosevelt Road (?) … there will probably be signs.
  • Meeting at ISC (1011 Lake Street) at 1 pm with Gabes and Michael. See Mapquest printout;
  • After meeting continue West on Rt. 90, into Wisconsin if possible.

 

 

 

 

Part 2: Aug 3 to Aug 7 - Chicago to the Black Hills to Denver (1100 miles)

 

  • The Mississippi River at LaCrosse, Wn, and the wide Missouri River in South Dakota
  • The incomparable Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota
  • The Badlands of South Dakota
  • Free ice water at Wall Drug Store in Wall, SD
  • The Black Hills of South Dakota for hiking, trout fishing, gambling (?) and easy access to
    • Mount Rushmore
    • Deadwood
    • National Museum of Woodcarving
    • a Petrified Forest and a Mammoth Site
    • the Sturgis motorcycle "rally" ("100's of thousands of cyclists")
    • and possibly: Crazy Horse Memorial, Devil's Tower, Spearfish Canyon, Needles Highway, Bear Country, Jewel Cave NM and Wind Cave NP.

 

 

Saturday

Aug 3

 

 

  • Up early and drive west. Use Rt. 90 all the way to Rapid City.
  • Visit the incomparable Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD!? Open 8 to 9. Exit 330.
  • Stay somewhere in South Dakota (as far west as possible).

 

 

Sunday

Aug 4

 

  • Drive through The Badlands. Exit 131. End up at …
  • … Wall Drug Store.
  • Drive to the Black Hills area and start touring … Rushmore, Wood Carving?
  • Check into the Dakota Cowboy Inn (pg 577) in Custer, SD, for two nights (at a hefty $120/night due to the Sturgis Rally), conf #804202.

 

 

Monday

  • Black Hills area [up early, Needles Highway, Petrified Forest, Sturgis Rally?, Deadwood for dinner?]

 

Tuesday

Aug 6

 

 

  • Leave the Dakota Inn
  • Black Hills area [Rushmore, Woodcarving?, fishing?, Mammoth Site]
  • Head south out of motorcycle madness; stay somewhere between BH and Denver … maybe hit Jewel Cave NM on the way out.
  • Stay in Lusk, Wyoming at the Trail Motel (inflated to $72), conf #450, pg. 357.

 

 

Wednesday

Aug 7

 

 

  • Golf in Lusk! Or somewhere else?
  • Drive to Denver (230 miles) and check into the Red Lion (see below) - I70, exit 278, just south, 4040 Quebec St.

 

 

 

 

 

Part 3: Aug 8 to Aug 13 - Denver with the Girls

 

  • Golden (Coors Brewery, Lookout Mountain, Mother Cabrini shrine)
  • Coors field
  • Rocky Mountain National Park
  • Colorado Springs (Air Force Academy, Cave of the Winds, Pike's Peak)
  • Plus maybe: Six Flags, Museum of Miniature Dolls and Toys, Aviation and Space Center, Nature and Science Museum
  • Stay at the Red Lion Hotel, Denver Central; (303-321-6666); Conf # 85074114; page 283; $71/room weekdays, $55/room Fri/Sat;

Thursday

Aug 8

 

 

  • Girls catch 11:46 a.m. flight to Denver. Arrive at 1:42 p.m. (4 hour flight). United Airlines Flight 1191, Snack, Terminal D.
  • Guys unpack and settle in. Maybe visit the brewery? Rest? An Internet Café? The Aviation Museum?
  • We all meet at the Red Lion Hotel, Denver Central. (303-321-6666) Conf # 85074114; Girls take a courtesy car from the airport; or meet at airport?
  • Pop over to Golden (Coors Brewery [till 4], Lookout Mountain, Mother Cabrini shrine) which is about 20 miles west on Rt. 70/58.

  • Guys leave late afternoon, early evening. Head east on Rt. 70. Get to Kansas (200 miles)?
  • Girls hang out and pack and do whatever they like! (Zoo?, Nat History Museum?)

 

 

 

 

 

Part 4: Aug 14 to Aug 17 - Denver to Downingtown (1700 miles)

 

  • Sternburg Museum of Natural History in Hayes, Kansas.
  • KC Royals Stadium
  • St. Louis Arch

Aug 14

 

  • Girls catch 10:15 a.m. flight to Philadelphia. Arrive 3:45 p.m. (3.5 hour flight). United Airlines Flight 1146.
  • Guys continue east on Rt. 70 first thing in the morning.
  • Visit Sternburg Museum of Natural History in Hayes, Kansas?
  • Stay at the Holiday Inn across from the stadium in Kansas City; conf #67626684; page 418/428; $89
  • Walk up tix for the KC/NYY game at ? p.m., maybe with Terry (# ?)

  • Continue east on Rt. 70. Its 250 miles to St. Louis.
  • Visit the St. Louis Arch.
