1999 Tom and Daddy Trip
Virginia
Again, putting this review together over 10 years after we took the trip. I've searched my files
and have found an itinery, several brochures of places we visited, and about a dozen really bad photos which I
have just thrown out. The photos shown here were taken from public web sites.
Itinery
- Sunday, August 1
- Leave around 11am.
- Inner harbor, Baltimore. We've been here before but it is always a fun place. There is a good chance we toured the ship at anchor in the harbor.
- Visit with Geoff Renshaw at the Baltimore Brewing Company at about 4pm for an early dinner. Always good to see Geoff.
- Drive south past Washington, so as not to have to deal with traffic in the morning.
- Monday, August 2
- Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park. Stopped at various visitor centers and
scenic lookouts. For some reason I have a distincy memory of pulling into a rest stop and
taking a 10 minute nap
in the car while Tom waited patiently.
- Luray Caverns
- Visit and have dinner with Jim and Kathy Kaeli, in Harrisonburg, VA.
- Paige and James, the Kaeli kids, show Tom how he can create his own
web page by going to a some kid's site on the web - this sparks a ten year love affair with web
design for Tom and is a key moment in his youth.
- As we are leaving Kathy surprises me by saying that their friend Jane, who
is also my friend Jane, said that we should stop by their place and say hello.
Turns out Jane Prey's husband works with Jim. I did not know that and had been wondering how I could
get in touch with Jane for a visit. Small world. We visit with Jane and her two
girls for about an hour and then drive further south.
- Tuesday, August 3
- Drive into Charlottesville for two nights at the Day's Inn. Its nice to settle into a place for a little.
- Visit the gorgeous campus of the University of Virginia. How could you not come out of that place smarter?
- Not completely sure but I think we went to movies and saw Inspector Gadget.
- Wednesday, August 4
- Visit Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home, toured the house, grounds, Mulberry Row, hung out,
it was awesome. We especially like Jefferson's various contraptions, for example his
double pen system for making copies. We think TJ was the original Inspector Gadget.
- Nice dinner at a brew pub in a downtown "mall".
- Thursday, August 5
- Arrive at King's Dominion, Virginia's "premier" Amusement Park at about opening time, 10 AM. Spend most of the day on rides,
swimming, eating and watching shows. I do believe this was Tom's favorite day of the trip.
- Head north, towards home, and eventually grab a motel. Sleep very well!
- Friday, August 6
- Home. Tom starts building web sites ...
